KUALA LUMPUR (NST) : Up to 4,756 medical personnel have contracted Covid-19 since Jan last year, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

However, the medical personnel – 3,101 women and 1,655 men – were not infected during the course of work, he said.

“Close to half of them, making up 43 per cent, were infected while they were in the community.

“Even yesterday, the ministry received a report of 85 new cases involving medical personnel.

“There were also new infections reported at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu bringing the tally to 93,” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said this during a virtual Covid-19 Emergency period engagement session with the media organised by the ministry today.

He said that non-healthcare frontliners, involving 936 policemen and personnel had also tested positive for Covid-19.
